Making something special
One of the special projects I have been working on is helping a great guy create a beautiful gift for his girlfriend. He wanted to create a scrapbook for her to commemorate their first big trip together and give it to her for her birthday. It is wonderful way to keep their memories and I know that she will appreciate the hard work that he put into it. It is important to note that this is not a particularly crafty guy so this is a really a stretch for him, but with a good attitude, willingness to get out of his comfort zone and the desire to make something special - He is doing amazing!
This is one of the first times I have helped coach a guy scrapbook and it is such a good experience. To put him at ease with something that he normally doesn't do, the first thing he did was pick the pictures that he liked, printed them and then organized them by day and event/activity. He initially sorted them chronologically (which eased his analytical mind) and then added in any items he had connected to his trip, such as parts of map or tickets.
A great tip to sort things was that we used one of those dollar store coupon holders to sort the items and then placed it with all his supplies in a 12x12 plastic case with the rest of his supplies. We then started with the basics and he looked through some scrapbooks that I had and my scrapbooking pinterest boards to get ideas and we chatted about the trip and the pictures so that he would be inspired and we could begin.
His first pages were basic and clean, focusing in on a single picture or a few pictures with a simple almost plain background. As he started getting more comfortable with tools, shapes, and new designs it became a bit faster and more fun to finish his pages.
We also started using tools and tricks for new design ideas. For example, my trusty Creative Memories oval shape for cutting and some washi tape became a good helper for him to layout the letters for a curved page title.
We have worked on it a few times now and it is really coming along well and can't wait for the finished product. It is a fun experience to able to work with him and see how his creativity is growing, his skills are getting better and how proud he is of the lovely gift that he is making. This masterpiece in progress shows that guys are great crafters!
