Using vinyl to turn a plain white espresso cup into the perfect cafecito cup
With it being Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, I am finally posting about one of my favorite easy projects to celebrate a little bit of Latino traditions. Today we celebrate our love of good coffee, with a special focus on the cafecito we love in Miami! With a little vinyl and an image from Design Space, I used my Cricut to turn this plain espresso cup into a cup that any cafecito lover would appreciate.
Coffee is so different in different places, so that Turkish coffee is different than French coffee that is different from Italian coffee, one of my first time experiencing the differences in coffee is when I moved to Miami and learned about Cuban coffee. I grew up with my grandmother having a cafe con leche (Regular coffee with milk, sometimes condensed milk for sweetness). On extra cold mornings in New York, my grandma would even give me some cafe con leche so I would be warmer on my walk to school. Cuban coffee is not my grandma's cafe con leche. Cuban coffee, cafe Cubano in Spanish, is a rich concoction of strong coffee with sugar that is stirred with the first drop of coffee until it becomes a beautiful brown foam that sits on top of the coffee.
Cuban coffee is strong and sweet and is usually served in one of three ways. A very common way to order is at a walk up window where you would get a colada, that is the coffee in a large cup where they give you little shot cups so that you can share shots of coffee with your friends, family, coworkers, or anyone you like. In restaurants, cafes, and at home you typically get a small espresso cup of cafecito (little coffee). If you would like your Cuban coffee to be served with milk, you order a cortadito (that translate literally into something like little cut - I supposed the coffee is cut with the milk?) which would come in a slightly larger cup.
Now with a little background on our cafecito, let's focus on the project:
For our project we are using espresso cups for our cafecito cups. The image from Design Space is perfect for a cafecito fan like myself. It is modified a little to simplify some elements and sized to fit the espresso cup. I then cut the image in blue vinyl and applied to the cup. A good tip since the bottom of the cup we are using is curved is to make small slits at the bottom of the transfer tape so that it will be applied more evenly.
If you would like to make a project like this, you can go into my project at Design Space and cut the image for yourself. My project is sized to fit a small espresso cup but you can modify the size to fit whatever cup you are decorating.
It was such an easy project, I quickly made another one so that I would have the pair. Pretty cute, right?
